The Newcastle Ferry
I'm grateful to Ian Holmes for the following local knowledge: The ferry is on the Tyne. In the background is Newcastle Castle, St Nicholas' Cathedral and the old bridge. The bridge was built 1781 and closed 1867. As there is no High Level bridge the picture is pre 1849. The above right image, from a different angle and dated 1859, shows some of those landmarks in closer detail.
Joseph Burn & Co, Stepney Bank Pottery, Ouseburn
According to R C Bell (Tyneside Pottery), Joseph Burn succeeded R C Bell, J Burn & Co operated between 1852–60, succeeding Thomas Bell & Co (1847–52) at the Stepney Bank Pottery.
C T Maling link
This transfer also has a link to Maling on the basis of the bowl below in the Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums collection. The catalogue says it has a triangular impressed mark with the initials CTM.
The bowl below is unmarked, but has the same High-Level Bridge transfer, and a transfer entitled 'In Distress'
Below is a third bowl, again unmarked, that combines the 'In Distress' transfer with the Newcastle Ferry. This is the same version of the Ferry transfer that appears on the Burn & Co marked bowl above. Note the scratch above the flag in the last detail.
Although the relationship between these neighbouring potteries is unclear, it seems possible, given the strong similarities of decoration that Burn & Co supplied their neighbour, Maling, with blank earthenware for decoration.
